Smart Energy Systems

Concerns over climate change, energy security, the aging energy infrastructure and escalating energy costs require a fundamental change in the way we supply and consume energy. Energy Leeds is an interdisciplinary research centre that brings together world-leading academics from a broad range of disciplines in order to address this exceptionally important global challenge. Leeds expertise in the sector includes greening fossil fuel power generation, bioenergy, fundamental and applied combustion science and technology, renewables, petroleum exploration and production, smart grids, energy storage and greener transport. We also work with partners in developing supporting science and technology, including computational modelling capability; process and system optimisation; as well as policy and socio-technical assessment of energy technologies and systems.

In the Smart Energy Systems area, we conduct high impact research into smart, efficient and resilient energy systems and the team includes expertise in energy economics & policy, renewables, bioenergy, energy recovery, energy storage and power electronics. The School of Electronic & Electrical Engineering seeks a University Academic Fellow who will conduct research of the very highest calibre and be a major contributor to this Energy Leeds research. A very wide range of opportunities has been identified for interdisciplinary research in the application of electronic and electrical engineering to Smart Grid Systems and Smart Cities. The design of smart grid systems requires an integrated approach whereby both communication and energy management systems should be jointly optimised – a significant challenge. Integration of renewable energy sources into the existing aging power grid is a very challenging and multi-faceted problem, requiring bi-directional power control and dynamic demand management, enabled by holistic integration of communications and power control systems. Research into smart cities offers an extremely broad range of opportunities for research in domestic and industrial energy systems, the Internet of Things, electric vehicles, transport systems, and grid-connected microgeneration. You will lead research in one or more of these areas, building on existing strengths in renewable energy systems, power electronics, control, embedded systems and communications.
