Volcanic Gas and Aerosol Emission

The four key observational techniques for understanding the physics of volcanoes are geodesy, seismology, petrology and gas emissions. State-of-the-art research combines these to constrain our understanding of volcanic processes.  Through this fellowship, we seek to bring expertise in volcanic gas and aerosol emission to the Volcano Studies Group at Leeds. You would be expected to lead the development of high-impact interdisciplinary research on volcanic processes, and link the existing expertise in volcanism with the strength in atmospheric science at Leeds.

School of Earth and Environment researchers work on a number of high-profile research projects investigating active volcanism around the world. These include major consortium projects in Iceland (EU-FUTUREVOLC; NERC-VANAHEIM), Latin America (EU-VUELCO; NERC-STREVA), and East Africa (NERC-Afar; NERC-RiftVolc). The appointment will allow us to increase our contribution to research excellence in the future and will provide a bridge between the volcano interests of the Institute of Geophysics and Tectonics (IGT) and those of the Institute of Climate and Atmospheric Science (ICAS), for whom the dispersion of volcanic emissions in the atmosphere is the main interest. Volcano studies are a key component of the NERC Centre for Observation and Modelling of Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Tectonics (COMET; http://comet.nerc.ac.uk), led by the University of Leeds since April 2014.

We expect to appoint an exceptional research scientist who will develop a research profile that will contribute to the University’s ambition to excel at REF2020.  We also expect you to develop non-academic impact by working with the Climate and Geohazards Hub (http://www.cgs.leeds.ac.uk), for example through the quantification of volcanic hazard and reduction of volcanic risk; monitoring of gas emissions is a key tool for forecasting eruptions.  You will contribute to research-based teaching in relevant modules at BSc and MSc level, through a mixture of face-to-face interaction, preparation of online materials and tools, and field teaching,

With a PhD in a relevant discipline, you will have expertise and a strong research record in volcanic gas and/or aerosol emission, the ability to teach at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate level, as well as a clear and compelling vision for personal academic development.
