Regenerative Therapies and Devices

1.    Musculosketal Regenerative Therapies and Devices
2.    Cardiovascular Regenerative Therapies and Devices

Advanced medical devices and therapies, which facilitate the regeneration of body tissues, offer the potential to revolutionise healthcare in the 21st century. Therapies, which utilise innovative acellular technologies to guide the patient’s autologous stem cells to repair degenerative tissues, can be translated through a medical device regulatory pathway and offer lower risk and shorter (lower cost) development and translation pathways.

You will develop an innovative multidisciplinary research profile in acellular technologies for the treatment of musculoskeletal or cardiovascular disease that will address unmet clinical need, contribute to and enhance the world leading activities of the Institute of Medical & Biological Engineering (iMBE http://www.imbe.leeds.ac.uk/) at Leeds with a sustained record of internationally excellent publications. Based in the School of Biomedical Sciences, you will develop strong collaborations with biomedical engineers in iMBE, biologists with complementary skills within the school and musculoskeletal or cardiovascular clinicians. You will establish strategic national and international collaborations to enhance your research profile. You will interface with industry, the health service and regulatory and government bodies to realise the potential social and economic impact of your challenge led research activities.

You will co-supervise multidisciplinary PhDs, submit project grant applications and applications for a personal fellowship [eg. EPSRC early-career, Arthritis Research UK career development or British Heart Foundation intermediate basic science]. You will also collaborate with colleagues across the University in the submission of major cross-faculty programme and centre grants.

You will have significant proven research experience in an appropriate area of musculoskeletal or cardiovascular bioscience/bioengineering demonstrated by authorship of refereed publications of international quality. You will also have experience of interdisciplinary working across the biosciences and engineering and innovation management, the ability to teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and a clear and compelling vision for personal academic development.

A proven record of achievement in international quality publications is essential to contribute to the University’s ambition to excel at REF2020. In addition, the successful candidates will provide research supervision and attract research students to the University and undertake a teaching load deemed appropriate by the Head of School, which will be significantly reduced in the first years of the fellowship.
