Smart Medical Devices for Colorectal Disease

Surgical Technologies research in the School of Mechanical Engineering, University of Leeds has expanded in the last 7-8 years. There is a now a research team of 10 PhD students and 4 Post Doctoral Research Assistants. There is a great opportunity to expand as we capitalise on the growing University emphasis on colorectal disease. The HTC in Colorectal Disease is an NIHR funded network, and involves collaborators from University of Leeds and across the UK.  It provides a wealth of opportunities to engage with clinicians, patients and industry. In June 2014 a new EPSRC network was created which focuses on technologies in incontinence. A new grant funded by EPSRC will develop smart surfaces for surgical devices. This collaboration between engineering and the clinicians in the Academic Unit of Surgery has the potential to expand and will provide a very fruitful area for a top class engineer with an interest in medical devices.

In 2014 the School of Mechanical Engineering also received substantial investment from EPSRC for the creation of the Centre for Innovative Robotic Systems.  The centre provides the successful applicant with the opportunity to access some of the most advanced manufacturing facilities for small scale robotics or medical devices in the UK.

You will be embedded within the School of Mechanical Engineering, with the HTC providing access to clinicians, professional bodies, commercial partners, and technology networks to provide a research focus with enhanced collaborative and translational opportunities.
