Crime and Policing Data Analytics

The fellowship will be based in the School of Law and be aligned with the Security and Justice Research Group of the Building Sustainable Societies transformation programme. You will be linked to and support the N8 Policing Research Partnership Catalyst Fund bid ‘Innovation and the Application of Knowledge for More Effective Policing’ which has been submitted to HEFCE Scrutiny Group, which, if funded will commence no later than September 2015. The creation of the post is subject to the application for funding being successful.

You will take responsibility for and lead the ‘Data Analytics’ Activity Strand within the project to provide a secure data repository service that will constitute a data analytics infrastructure enabling the pooling and storage of significant policing and other appropriate data sets. This will open up new avenues for data analysis, visualisation and data exploitation (for both police analysts and academics), providing opportunities for research and investigation that add significant value to the data.

The project will develop the capacity to host secure storage, networking and processing power of large crime and policing data sets and to link these with other non-police partner data sets. This will enable the exploitation of large police datasets and open up possibilities to explore the connections and linkages between police data and other sources of ‘big data’, including retail/consumer data. Together with the project Director (Professor Adam Crawford), you will help manage and oversee staff within the project and work with other members of the Law School, notably Dr Clifford Stott and Stuart Lister as well as colleagues from other Faculties/Schools, including Professor David Allen (Business School) and Dr Nicolas Malleson (Environment). You and the Catalyst project will connect with and draw lessons from the significant investment in data analytics capacity and capability around the Leeds Institute for Data Analytics. It will also enable the Law School to contribute to the QSteps Quantitative Methods programme funded by Nuffield Foundation.

You will be highly skilled in statistical methods and quantitative criminological analysis, with expertise in statistical methods and analysis of crime/police data and social science informatics (e.g. GIS, network analysis). You will also have experience of working collaboratively on complex research projects, a promising publication profile and be trained in advanced quantitative methods.

University Grade 8 (£38,511 to £45,954)
