Molecular Pathology and Digital Pathology

Advances in molecular and digital pathology promise to have a huge impact on medicine, patients and our understanding of human disease.  Pathology and Tumour Biology at the University of Leeds is a leading academic Pathology centre in the UK. It aims to deliver improvements in patient outcome and has internationally recognised research groupings for pathology/molecular pathology and digital pathology. We offer access to world leading basic and clinical research facilities, seamless interactions between scientists and clinicians, internal and external mentorship and the opportunity to join an ambitious, expanding group of pathology researchers in partnership with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, one of the UK’s largest Teaching Hospital Trusts. The centre is based at St James’s University Teaching Hospital, integrated with the NHS Clinical Histopathology Department, one of the largest in the UK and is part of the Leeds CRUK Cancer Centre and the Experimental Cancer Medicine Center. We have excellent collaborations with the world-class Leeds Clinical Trials Research Unit, the Leeds NIHR Diagnostic Evaluation Centre (DEC), surgery, computing and data visualization and health engineering.  Molecular & Digital Pathology is part of the MRC Centre for Medical BioInformatics, a newly funded £7M initiative to translate genomic and phenotypic data into practice within the NHS and industry. Our Digital pathology facility is sector leading for the digitisation of histopathology slides and development of data visualisation and training techniques including powerwalls for visualization of digital pathology images and their use with genomic and transcriptomic data.

We are also looking to expand the breadth of Genomics research undertaken in Leeds in areas including Genome Evolution, Genome Structure and Function, Genomic Methodologies  and Cancer Genomics.  The impact of genomic research in health and disease is increasing, in large part due to wide accessibility of high-throughout sequencing technologies. Leeds is set to become a UK leader in data acquisition, through the informatics infrastructure outlined above, excellent infrastructure for next generation sequencing and other genomics analyses including single cell manipulation and sequencing.

We are looking to recruit highly motivated individuals with excellent research profiles in:

  • molecular pathology and/or bioinformatics and digital pathology who are capable of developing and leading innovative research projects aligned to existing strengths in colorectal, breast and digital pathology research
  • in the development and evolution of cancer and the development of digital pathology
  • in tumour biology aligned to our existing research strengths in melanoma, brain and urogenital tumours.

Successful candidates will have a proven track record of research excellence and a vision to become an internationally competitive research leader of the future.

Applications are welcomed from clinically and non-clinically qualified applicants.

If you are clinically qualified these Fellowships provide an opportunity to develop on your existing academic experience and establish a clinical academic career. The nature of individual clinical / academic workload profiles will be determined by your current level of specialist training and agreement with our local NHS organisations, with whom we work in close partnership. We actively encourage applications from specialty trainee level to those who already hold specialist registration.

University Grade 8 (£38,511 to £45,954)

For clinical academic posts remuneration will be on the appropriate clinical academic scale (dependent upon individual clinical experience / qualification and therefore the level of Honorary Clinical Contract).
